Just another guy’s 2 cents on the technology world in education

What do you think?

Posted by enckc on August 1, 2007

What do you think about all this Web 2.0 stuff so far?  Is it all just a fad, a trend, something that doesn’t have much value in education?  Or is it something you want to explore further that you think might have a place in our schools?

I think it will be a large part of my class this coming year. I have been working with these tools all summer in anticipation of this. Here are some great articles to check out:

I think all of this information is really intriguing…there is so much out there. I feel it is really important for educators to stay up to date on technology, to know what is available to our students, and to be aware of what they are investing their time and energy in during their free time. These resources can be very useful in the classroom. I like blogs as they encourage “safe” communication for students. Students who would not typically speak out in class may be uninhibited by blogs and feel more open to communicating via this medium. It may be less intimidating and threatening. I know that I would have personally appreciated this as a student. Everyone would get to share and respond to the posts they connect with. This is a good way to get everyone talking and even discover similarities and common thoughts and ideas.

I was reading your first blog and thinking, I will never be able to keep up with all this new technology. You will have a new desk in my classroom where I expect you to be every hour of every day.

I can see a lot of potential for all these sites. You’re never too old to learn new things.

I really like the idea of the blogs, but this is a bit over my head at the moment. I know what I would like to do – just am a little fuzzy on how to get started and builiding a page.
Thanks for all your hard work in teaching us! I really appreciate it! :)

Not a fad, will continue to expand and be commonplace for kids. To prepare them for the working world, schools need to provide technology skills.

I feel web 2.0 content has its advantages and disadvantages (of course this is the case with almost anything). I truly believe it’s just a matter of narrowing down what works best for you and your needs. Otherwise navigating randomly can be an overwhelming experience.

I think all of this will continue, and do so at amazing speed, so I do not believe it is a fad. Being an elementary teacher and totally new to Web 2.0, I cannot see me using this in my classroom any time soon. I know this is the world the kids today live in, I’m just not there yet! I’d need more practice myself before I could see how to implement it in my classroom.

I don’t think this is a fad at all. Students are excited at the prospect of learning through various mediums. We need to catch up with the technology our students are currently using on their own, as well as the technology surrounding districts are already immersing their students in.
